This is the first book in the series that didn't have 50 life-altering events happening to the same person. In fact, you don't get any real drama until past the halfway mark. Some how John/Juan can't write a book without a body count, so you know somebody has to die. I enjoyed this story, even with the continuity errors and improbable events. The number of people that show up for the family & friends party required a flow chart. With an editor who could help smooth out this story it could have been a four+ star book. 3.15 for Journals.Product details

I want to start off by saying that I had some issues with this book. But there were some positives and I’m going to talk about both here.
On a positive note I liked the concept of this book. Seventeen year old finally getting adopted from an orphanage by a rich same sex couple. Has a great brother and sister now. Awesome family. It radiates happiness. I also loved that this was a standalone. Technically it’s book 4 but because it’s the next generation you don’t NEED to read 1-3. However if you want to know how Nick and John (The parents) came to be than yeah you probably want to read it.
I felt there was so much promise to this book. Interesting characters, and the ideas were sound. But the issues were beyond glaring. First, I want to talk about the writing. It was pedantic. The dialog was elementary. And there was far too much repetition. It made for a frustrating read. Often times the character would think something, then speak it out loud, then someone would ask the question and he’d answer again. This was a constant issue with the book.
There’s a mystery to this story and I’m assuming there will be another book since the mystery is not at all solved. That was a bit unsettling. This is a very over the top dramatic book. The characters are in an Elite High School that is actually called Elite. The kids are all awful and I was really shocked that pretty much no adults intervened and if they did they disappeared.
Though I wasn’t a fan with how the author chose to deal with sex of teenagers or their sexuality I also respect that this was his book and his choice and of course we all have our own views.
I wanted to love this book. From the blurb it sounded amazing. It really needs a lot of work with dialog, repetition, and filling some serious plot holes.

I very much enjoyed the premise of this Surviving Elite High Next Generation story orphan, Robbie Carroll, gets adopted by the happily married John Ames and Nick Hawkins of the original story, who now have two teenaged children of their own. With three pubescent teenagers in the house (Nicky, Lily, and Robbie) and a boatload of equally hormonal adolescent cousins and friends making merry, Nick and John have their hands full.
Revealed from the point of view of its rowdy teenaged cast, the tempo of the story at first seemed erratic and over-the-top-insta-emotional, until I decided to simply immerse myself into the tale with the mindset of a horny seventeen-year-old. From this point of view, the characters and the dialogue shine, which is fitting because this is a Young Adult book. That said, once I connected with my inner teen, I had a blast experiencing the do-or-die emotional roller coaster of this group of privileged, attractive teens whose world revolves around having fun. Expect raucous trips to the mall, sexting, partying, and plenty of gossip-girling in addition to some tender love scenes. There are a few villainous teens who give the popular clique some setbacks, but they get their comeuppance and in this… it’s a win for the good guys, though not without with some residual angst.
In my opinion, the high points of this story revolve around the hint of a dark mystery lurking in Robbie’s background. While the book never fully reveals Robbie’s story, the compelling vignettes of murky, fragmented waking dreams are both chilling and heartrending, in that Robbie never shares these episodes with anyone. These unsettling incidents made Robbie very much a sympathetic character and had me muttering “Tell somebody...” repeatedly to my . I wanted more of these inner-lonely-lost-boy-with-the-outer-shell-of-joy moments, but I suspect “Next Generation” is the first of a new Surviving Elite High series. I hope it is—I for one am yearning to learn what dark secrets might crush the happiness of the fragile orphan that is Robbie Carroll, and what effect his mysterious past may have on this joyously youthful group of characters.
I can’t leave without mentioning that I loved that pretty much every gay character in the book was out, accepted, and happy! Woot!
All in all, a solid start to what promises to be an epic ride! Go get yourself a copy!
