There's nothing really unusual about this piece, except for its excellence. It has a somewhat exotic setting, and all of the boxes are checked quite nicely. As a ghost story, it's quite effective, in the is it live? or Memorex? vein.
But the detailed sensory assault-holy schmidt!
You will live this story, and that's where the excellence comes in. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the feel of the place, are all depicted carefully, delightfully. The sex scene is realistic, if a trifle less sensual than the rest of the proceedings.
I read it on the bus, with someone reading it over my shoulder and gasping at the naughty bits.
People are funny. This story is really good. There's a book by the same title. I bought it on the strength of this slim tale.
MONSOON is a short story that you need to read at least twice. Read it first to take a mysterious journey to another world--on earth! The second time, read it outloud! With an economy of writing, typical of this author,each word, alliteration, and gliding sentence becomes at very least, a kinesthetic experience. It sounds and feels like India-You can almost feel the dust and grit, and then the rain....flowing as easily as the words you are reading. You will be left with an experience that will stay with you....
