It's a visual world. Words alone, no matter how insightful, will not get the attention they deserve without powerful images to bolster their meaning.

Created by a lawyer-scholar team, HOW TO USE EYE-CATCHING IMAGES WITHOUT PAYING A FORTUNE OR A LAWYER is a step-by-step guide for helping writers, bloggers, and educators figure out when they need permission, how to find the rights holder, and what kind of rights they need. Also included is an exhaustive list of sources for news, celebrity, movie, sports, and stock images, as well as images available for free in the public domain.

Using images is drought with danger for authors and publishers because many times you're not 100 percent sure what rights you have. When I first started publishing my books I let designers source the images for me. As time went on I questioned this strategy. If you purchased the cover on Fiverr or another site, who's to say they acquired them legally. When you have a paperback or audio book cover made how do you know they paid for the new licences. Just because they charged extra for the image doesn't mean everything is on the up-and-up.

The book does a good job explaining the copyright law involved, how to source illustrations, and how to check copyright.

Best advice: buy stock photos and know what rights you're purchasing.

How to Use EyeCatching Images Without Paying a Fortune or a Lawyer edition by Helen Sedwick Jessica Brown Reference eBooks Reviews

This book is great if you need direct resources for obtaining works of art and photos. The authors do a great job of simplifying the process. This book is extremely easy to read and comprehend.
The book needs to be on every author's shelf. Concise and direct! Now I won't keep myself up at night worrying about those pesky legal questions!
One of those books that adds a tremendous amount of value to your capabilities as a writer, blogger, or businessman.
The answer is very simple. Paint it yourself or get sued. The only free images are from the US Government. (Only until the Republicans find out they exist. Then they will be gone too.) Thus the book is very short and to the point. "Don't copy that image from the internet!" Could have put that in the title. Still, the book is cheap, and you need to know this before you grab an image and use it. Copyright law is pretty complex. So forget the title. Pay the megabucks for the lawyer or get out your paintbrush. Ms. Sedwick provides good advise even thought her title is totally contradicted by the content of her book. She could have at least provided a chapter on how to protect the image you painted for your book. Or a chapter on,
"you just paid an artist mucho dinero, now what." But those chapters are not there. So, off you go to your lawyer.
Very helpful in determining what is pubic domain and what is not! A tricky subject since the internet allows us to copy images from many different sources without knowing the status of same. Much needed explaination.
This how-to-book is probably the best "little" book I've read all year. It offers extremely helpful advice for anyone wanting to utilize eye-catching images from the internet--without major expenses or headaches. Author Helen Sedwick again offers readers a valuable book. I say "buy it!"
If you think you're safe from legal action because you only occasionally misappropriate a copyright image to use on your web site you might want to search out articles posted by those who did get hit with one of those infamous demand letters seeking several thousand dollars or face court action. Maybe you're a gambler and feel lucky. I'd rather not not risk legal action because it's never pretty (or cheap).

I've been aware of several sources for copyright free images. What I wasn't aware of is the vast number of sources for those images.

Do yourself a favor and play safe. Buy the book.
